What is NPSHa and why does it matter?

NPSHa (Net Positive Suction Head available) = (P_s/ρg) + (V_s²/2g) - P_v/ρg, where P_s is suction pressure, V_s is suction velocity, and P_v is vapor pressure. NPSHa must exceed NPSHr (required) by a safety margin, typically 0.5–1 m, to avoid cavitation.

What happens if NPSHa is less than NPSHr?

The pump will cavitate — liquid vaporizes at the impeller inlet, causing noise, vibration, erosion, and reduced performance. Always ensure NPSHa > NPSHr + safety margin (usually 0.5 m minimum per Hydraulic Institute standards).
