What types of barrier options exist?

Down-and-in (DI): activates when price falls to barrier. Down-and-out (DO): extinguishes when price falls to barrier. Up-and-in and up-and-out with reverse logic. Rebate may be paid if option is knocked out.

Why are barrier options cheaper than vanilla?
