How does wholesale CBDC improve on existing RTGS systems?

Wholesale CBDC enables atomic DvP (delivery versus payment) settlement across asset classes and borders without correspondent bank intermediation, potentially settling in seconds versus T+2. BIS Project Jura demonstrated cross-border EUR-CHF FX settlement in under 2 seconds on distributed ledger infrastructure.

What is the difference between wholesale and retail CBDC?

Wholesale CBDC is used only between financial institutions for large-value settlements, replacing or complementing RTGS. Retail CBDC is a digital equivalent of physical currency for general public use, introducing profound design choices around privacy, programmability, and impact on commercial bank deposits.
