How is gamma calculated?

Gamma = N'(d1) / (S x sigma x sqrt(T)), where N' is the standard normal PDF. Gamma is highest for ATM options near expiry. Same for calls and puts with same strike and expiry.

High gamma means delta changes rapidly with price, requiring frequent hedge rebalancing. Long gamma: profit from large moves. Short gamma (e.g. short straddle): profit from small moves, at risk from large moves.
