What changed in Indian capital gains tax in Budget 2024?

From July 23, 2024: STCG on listed equity and equity mutual funds raised to 20% (from 15%). LTCG on listed equity raised to 12.5% (from 10%) with the Rs 1 lakh exemption raised to Rs 1.25 lakh. LTCG on property: indexation benefit removed; 12.5% flat without indexation (12.5% or 20% with indexation for transfers before July 23, 2024).

What is the holding period for LTCG on equity in India?

Listed equity shares and equity-oriented mutual funds: 12 months. Unlisted equity shares and immovable property: 24 months. Debt mutual funds, gold: 36 months (2 years for bonds held before April 2023 STCG/LTCG rule change).

How is LTCG on property calculated without indexation?

Under new rules from July 2024: LTCG on property = sale price minus original cost (no inflation indexation). Tax = 12.5% on this gain. For properties acquired before July 23, 2024, taxpayers can choose: 12.5% without indexation or 20% with indexation (whichever is lower).
