How does KiwiSaver work?

Auto-enrolled for employees. Contribute 3%, 4%, 6%, 8%, or 10% of gross pay. Employer contributes minimum 3% (net of employer superannuation contribution tax, ESCT). Government contributes Member Tax Credit: 50c per $1 up to $521/year if you contribute $1,042+.

What are KiwiSaver fund types?

KiwiSaver funds range from Conservative (bonds-heavy, low return/risk) through Balanced to Growth and Aggressive (equity-heavy, higher return/risk). Default fund for new members may not be optimal; active choice is important.

Can KiwiSaver be used for a first home?

First home withdrawal allowed after 3 years in KiwiSaver (except minimum $1,000 must remain). Must be buying a first home you will live in. KiwiSaver First Home Grant (government: $3,000-$10,000) also available based on years contributing and home price.

When can KiwiSaver be fully withdrawn?

Full withdrawal at NZ Superannuation qualifying age (currently 65). Earlier for significant financial hardship, serious illness, permanent emigration, or death. No RMD requirements in New Zealand.

How does PIE tax work for KiwiSaver?

KiwiSaver funds are Portfolio Investment Entities (PIEs). Investment income is taxed at your Prescribed Investor Rate (PIR: 10.5%, 17.5%, or 28%), usually lower than marginal rate. Tax is paid by the fund; no further personal tax liability.
