ICU Caloric Target Calculator (Phase-Based)

Calculates caloric targets for critically ill patients by phase. Acute phase (days 1–3): 20–25 kcal/kg/day (permissive underfeeding avoids hyperglycemia and overfeeding complications). Stable/recovery phase (day 4+): 25–30 kcal/kg/day. Avoid overfeeding (>35 kcal/kg): increases CO2 production, hepatic steatosis, and infection risk. Use actual body weight for non-obese; adjusted weight for BMI >30.

Clinical Guidance

BMI is a screening measure of body size, not a direct measure of body fat. The standard WHO categories are underweight (<18.5), normal (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9), and obese (≥30).

BMI can overestimate body fat in athletes with high muscle mass and underestimate it in older adults with low muscle mass. Interpret it alongside waist circumference and clinical context rather than as a standalone diagnosis.
