Clinical Guidance

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale measures the general level of daytime sleepiness by asking how likely the respondent is to doze in eight everyday situations. Each is scored 0–3 and the total ranges 0–24. Scores of 0–10 are considered normal; 11–14 mild, 15–17 moderate, and 18–24 severe excessive daytime sleepiness.

The ESS is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test. A high score warrants further evaluation (e.g. polysomnography) for sleep-disordered breathing and other sleep disorders. Always interpret alongside the full clinical picture.
