When should lipid screening begin in low-risk adults?

For men without CVD risk factors, screening starts at age 35. For women without risk factors, screening starts at age 45. All adults 20 or older with risk factors should be screened.

Is fasting required for lipid screening?

Non-fasting lipid panels are acceptable for initial cardiovascular risk assessment. Fasting (9-12 hours) is recommended for accurate triglyceride measurement and LDL calculation.

How often should lipids be checked?

For normal results without risk factors: every 4-6 years. With risk factors or borderline values: annually or as clinically indicated. On statin therapy: 4-12 weeks after initiation, then annually.
