Simpson Biplane Ejection Fraction from Apical Views

Modified Simpson biplane ejection fraction is the default echo measure of systolic function. This page takes end-diastolic and end-systolic areas and lengths from the A4C and A2C views and returns the biplane EF.

Clinical Guidance

The biplane method of discs (modified Simpson's rule) sums cross-sectional disc areas traced in the apical 4-chamber and 2-chamber views to estimate left ventricular volumes. LVEF is the fraction of end-diastolic volume ejected per beat: (EDV − ESV) ÷ EDV × 100. Stroke volume is EDV − ESV.

The ASE/EACVI chamber quantification guidelines classify LVEF as normal at 52% or above in men and 54% or above in women, mildly reduced at 41–51%, moderately reduced at 30–40%, and severely reduced below 30%. How It Works

Modified Simpson biplane ejection fraction is the default echo measure of systolic function. This page takes end-diastolic and end-systolic areas and lengths from the A4C and A2C views and returns the biplane EF

Each component has a specific meaning:

  • A4C — The a4c recorded for the scenario being assessed.
  • A2C views — The a2c views recorded for the scenario being assessed.
  • Returns the biplane EF — The returns the biplane ef recorded for the scenario being assessed.

Note: Interpret the lvef simpson result against the thresholds and context described above.

How to Use

Enter the A4C, A2C views, returns the biplane EF for the scenario you are assessing. Modified Simpson biplane ejection fraction is the default echo measure of systolic function. This page takes end-diastolic and end-systolic areas and lengths from the A4C and A2C views and returns the biplane EF. Use the lvef simpson result to inform your calculation.
