What does the melanin index measure?

Melanin index (MI) from Mexameter or DermaSpectrometer measures melanin concentration in skin using the absorption difference at 660nm (melanin-sensitive) and 880nm (hemoglobin-insensitive). Higher MI = more melanin. Normal range varies by ethnicity and body site.

How is MI used in vitiligo monitoring?

MI is used to quantify repigmentation in vitiligo clinical trials and clinical practice. MI in lesional skin is significantly lower than adjacent normal skin. Treatment response monitoring uses MI change as an objective endpoint.

Can MI be used for UVB dosimetry?

Yes. Post-UVB MI rise correlates with erythema and tanning response. Serial MI measurements guide minimal erythema dose (MED) determination. Useful for phototherapy optimization especially in darker skin types.
