How does weight affect a horse's performance in a handicap race?

A commonly used rule of thumb in British racing is that 1 lb of additional weight costs a horse approximately 1 length per mile. A horse carrying 3 lbs more than standard will lose roughly 3 lengths in a 1-mile race — the basis of all British handicapping.

What does a BHA rating of 100 mean?

A BHA rating of 100 represents a horse performing at a competitive Group 2 to Group 3 level. Pattern race winners typically have ratings of 110–130+. Maiden and entry-level handicappers generally fall in the 55–80 range.
