Primarily: horizontal approach velocity at takeoff (~10-11 m/s for elite), takeoff angle (18-24° optimal, higher reduces horizontal velocity), and height of center of mass at takeoff. Mike Powell’s world record (8.95 m) had a measured approach of ~10.7 m/s.

Why is the takeoff angle lower than the theoretical 45° optimal?

At 45°, the athlete would need to reduce horizontal velocity drastically. At 18-24°, horizontal velocity is nearly preserved from the approach run. The lower angle sacrifices some vertical height to maintain the much faster horizontal speed.

What approach sprint time predicts elite long jump performance?

The fastest 100m sprinters dominate long jump: Carl Lewis and other elite jumpers ran sub-10.1 100m. A sprinter’s 10m fly (peak speed) correlates strongly (r > 0.85) with long jump distance in trained jumpers.
