VO₂ Max Calculator — Aerobic Fitness Level

Estimate your VO₂ max from running pace, heart rate, or field tests. Assess aerobic capacity and training zones.

The Cooper 12-Minute Run Test

VO₂ max is the maximum rate at which your body can consume oxygen during intense exercise, expressed in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min). It is widely regarded as the gold-standard measure of aerobic (cardiorespiratory) fitness. The Cooper test, developed by Dr. Kenneth Cooper in 1968, estimates VO₂ max from how far you can run in 12 minutes without laboratory equipment.

To perform the test, warm up, then run or walk as far as possible in exactly 12 minutes on a flat, measured course. Record the total distance and enter it above. The formula VO₂max = (distance in meters − 504.9) / 44.73 converts that distance into an estimated VO₂ max.

Interpreting Your Result

As a rough guide, an average 30-year-old man has a VO₂ max of roughly 40–45 mL/kg/min and an average woman 35–40. Elite endurance athletes reach 70–85 or higher. The fitness level shown uses the ACSM classification bands for young adults (18–25) as a reference — your category shifts with age, so treat it as an orientation, not a diagnosis. Consistent aerobic training, including high-intensity interval training and tempo runs, can raise VO₂ max by 10–25% over 6–12 weeks.

How It Works

Estimate your VO₂ max from running pace, heart rate, or field tests. Assess aerobic capacity and training zones

Each component has a specific meaning:

  • Running pace — The running pace recorded for the scenario being assessed.
  • Heart rate — The heart rate recorded for the scenario being assessed.
  • Or field tests — The or field tests recorded for the scenario being assessed.

Note: Interpret the vo₂ max calculator result against the thresholds and context described above.

How to Use

Enter the running pace, heart rate, or field tests for the scenario you are assessing. Estimate your VO₂ max from running pace, heart rate, or field tests. Assess aerobic capacity and training zones. Use the vo₂ max calculator result to inform your calculation.
