How is MTTF used in RAID design?

RAID 5 with N disks has a system MTTF ≈ MTTF_disk / (N × probability of second failure during rebuild). With modern large disks, RAID 5 rebuild window creates significant double-failure risk. RAID 6 is recommended.

What is the difference between MTTF and MTBF?

MTTF applies to non-repairable items (light bulbs, hard drives). MTBF = MTTF + MTTR applies to repairable systems where mean time between failures includes repair time.
