What Is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage is the proportion of your total body weight that is made up of fat tissue, expressed as a percentage. Unlike body weight or Body Mass Index (BMI), which lump together muscle, bone, water, and fat, body fat percentage isolates the fat component and gives a more direct picture of body composition. A person can weigh the same as a peer but carry a very different mix of lean mass and fat mass, which is why two people with identical BMI can look and perform quite differently.
Body fat is generally divided into two categories. Essential fat is the minimum amount needed for normal physiological function — it supports hormone production, cell membrane integrity, temperature regulation, and cushioning of organs. Storage fat is the additional adipose tissue accumulated in adipocytes, primarily in subcutaneous (under the skin) and visceral (around internal organs) depots. Body fat percentage reflects both, so a healthy value is one that is high enough to support essential function but not so high that it raises metabolic and cardiovascular risk.
Calculation Methods
Because body fat cannot be measured directly without specialized equipment, several estimation methods have been developed. They differ in cost, accuracy, and the inputs they require.
US Navy Circumference Method
The US Navy circumference method is the most widely used formula for at-home estimation because it requires only a tape measure. It was derived from measurements on US Navy personnel and uses body circumference at anatomical landmarks to estimate body fat.
For men:

For women:

All measurements are in centimeters. The constants 495 and 450 convert the Siri equation's density estimate into a percentage (body fat % = 495 / body density − 450).
Skinfold Calipers
Skinfold caliper measurement estimates body fat by pinching subcutaneous fat at standardized sites (commonly the chest, abdomen, and thigh for men; triceps, suprailiac, and thigh for women) and applying a prediction equation such as Jackson-Pollock. The sum of skinfolds is converted to body density, which is then converted to body fat percentage via the Siri or Brozek equation. When performed by a trained technician, skinfold measurement can be quite accurate, but self-measurement introduces significant variability.
BMI-Based Estimation
When only height and weight are available, body fat can be approximated from BMI using equations such as Deurenberg's:

Where sex is 1 for men and 0 for women. This method is convenient but inherits all of BMI's limitations — it cannot distinguish muscle from fat and tends to be least accurate in athletes, the elderly, and those at the extremes of body size.
Worked Example (US Navy Method)
A 30-year-old man with the following measurements:
- Height: 175 cm
- Neck: 38 cm
- Waist: 84 cm
Plugging into the men's formula:
- waist − neck = 84 − 38 = 46
- log₁₀(46) ≈ 1.6628
- log₁₀(175) ≈ 2.2430
- 1.0324 − (0.19077 × 1.6628) + (0.15456 × 2.2430)
- = 1.0324 − 0.3171 + 0.3466 ≈ 1.0619
- 495 / 1.0619 ≈ 466.15
- 466.15 − 450 ≈ 16.2%
A body fat percentage of 16.2% falls in the "fitness" range for men (see the table below).
Input Definitions
- Height: Measured without shoes, ideally to the nearest 0.5 cm. Used in all three methods. In the Navy formula, height is taken in centimeters.
- Neck circumference: Measured just below the larynx (Adam's apple) with the tape horizontal and the person looking straight ahead. Used in the Navy method.
- Waist circumference: For men, measured at the navel (umbilicus) with the abdomen relaxed. For women, measured at the natural waist (narrowest point). Used in the Navy method.
- Hip circumference: Measured at the widest point of the hips or buttocks. Required only for women in the Navy method.
- Age: In years. Used in the BMI-based and skinfold equations to account for the fact that body fat tends to increase with age at a given BMI.
- Sex: Most equations include a sex term because men and women differ in essential fat and fat distribution. Women naturally carry more essential fat (particularly for reproductive function), so healthy ranges are higher for women than men.
Healthy Ranges by Age and Sex
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) publishes widely cited body fat classification ranges for adults. Note that these are general guidelines, not clinical thresholds, and that healthy ranges shift slightly upward with age.

For adults over about 60, some researchers suggest adding roughly 2–5 percentage points to the upper end of the "acceptable" range, because body composition naturally shifts toward more fat and less lean mass with age. Dropping below the essential fat minimum is dangerous — insufficient fat disrupts hormone production, immune function, and thermoregulation, and in women can lead to menstrual irregularity or amenorrhea.
Important Caveats
Method Accuracy Varies
Each estimation method has a margin of error. The Navy circumference method typically carries a standard error of estimate around 3–4% body fat, skinfold calipers around 3–5% in trained hands (and more when self-administered), and BMI-based equations around 4–5%. Reference methods such as DXA, underwater weighing, and Bod Pod are more accurate but require clinical equipment and still carry errors of 1–3%. Treat any single estimate as an approximation, not a precise measurement.
Hydration Status
Body water content affects circumference and skinfold measurements. Dehydration can reduce skinfold thickness and waist circumference, artificially lowering the estimate, while water retention (from sodium intake, hormonal fluctuation, or alcohol) can inflate it. For consistency, measure under similar hydration conditions — ideally in the morning, before eating or drinking much, and not immediately after exercise.
Time of Day
Circumference measurements change throughout the day due to posture, meals, and fluid shifts. Waist circumference is typically smallest in the morning and largest in the evening. To track changes over time, measure at the same time of day under similar conditions.
Population Specificity
The Navy equations were derived from military personnel, who skew younger and more active than the general population, and the BMI-based equations were validated on predominantly European-ancestry cohorts. Both can be less accurate for older adults, athletes, the very lean, the very obese, and certain ethnic groups whose body composition or fat distribution differs from the reference population. Always interpret the result in context.
Essential vs. Storage Fat
A body fat percentage that is too low is not healthier. Essential fat is required for normal endocrine, immune, and reproductive function. Men below about 5% and women below about 13% are at risk of hormonal disruption, impaired recovery, and reduced performance. The "lower is always better" assumption is a common misconception — health sits in a range, not at the floor.
