What does the Austin NIH index measure?

The Activity Index (0–24) scores glomerular and tubular active lesions including cellular crescents, fibrinoid necrosis, interstitial inflammation, and hyaline deposits. The Chronicity Index (0–12) scores fibrous crescents, glomerulosclerosis, fibrous interstitial fibrosis, and tubular atrophy.

How do Austin scores guide treatment?

High AI (≥12) with low CI predicts response to aggressive immunosuppression. High CI indicates irreversible damage where immunosuppression benefit is reduced. Both indices together guide biopsy-directed therapy decisions.
