What metabolic precipitants worsen Leigh syndrome?

Intercurrent infections, febrile illness, and physiological stress precipitate metabolic crises. Valproate, which inhibits mitochondrial function, is absolutely contraindicated. High-dose thiamine may be beneficial in specific enzyme defects.
