What COMFORT score range indicates adequate sedation?

A COMFORT score of 17–26 (out of 40) indicates adequate sedation and analgesia. Scores below 17 suggest over-sedation; above 26 indicates under-sedation or distress. The COMFORT-B (behavioral) version uses 6 items without physiologic parameters.

When is the COMFORT scale most appropriate?

COMFORT is validated for intubated and mechanically ventilated pediatric patients. For extubated or post-operative children, FLACC or NRS is more appropriate. COMFORT-B can be used in spontaneously breathing children.
