What age range is FLACC used for?

FLACC is validated for use in infants and children from 2 months to 7 years, and for older children and adults who cannot self-report pain due to cognitive impairment, sedation, or intubation.

How is each FLACC component scored?

Face: 0=no expression, 1=occasional grimace/frown, 2=frequent grimace/clenched jaw. Legs: 0=normal, 1=uneasy, 2=kicking. Activity: 0=lying quietly, 1=squirming, 2=arched/rigid. Cry: 0=none, 1=whimper, 2=screaming. Consolability: 0=content, 1=can be consoled, 2=inconsolable.

What are limitations of the FLACC scale?

FLACC may not distinguish pain from other distress (fear, hunger, anxiety). Cultural and developmental variations in pain expression can affect scores. Sedated children may show suppressed pain behaviors despite significant pain.
