What does HOMA-B measure?

HOMA-B estimates the relative function of pancreatic beta cells by comparing insulin secretion (fasting insulin) relative to the prevailing glucose concentration. 100% represents normal beta cell function in a healthy non-diabetic individual.

How is HOMA-B interpreted?

Normal HOMA-B is approximately 100%. Values above 100% may indicate early compensatory hyperinsulinemia (common in obesity/prediabetes). Values declining below 50% suggest significant beta cell loss, as seen in progressing type 2 diabetes.

Can HOMA-B be used in type 1 diabetes?

HOMA-B has limited utility in type 1 diabetes where autoimmune destruction causes profound beta cell loss. It can be used to estimate residual C-peptide secretion in those with partial beta cell preservation early in the disease.
