What is the 1800 rule for insulin correction?

Divide 1800 by the total daily dose (TDD) of rapid-acting insulin. The result is how many mg/dL one unit of insulin will lower blood glucose. For regular insulin, use the 1700 rule.

How is the correction factor used?

Correction dose = (current BG - target BG) / correction factor. For example, if correction factor is 50, BG is 250, and target is 100, the correction dose is (250-100)/50 = 3 units.

When should correction insulin be given cautiously?

Use caution when correcting if: the previous correction dose was given within 2-3 hours (stacking risk), physical activity is planned, the patient is ill or eating reduced amounts, or insulin-on-board is unknown.
