How is a handicap index calculated?

Score differential = (adjusted gross score - course rating) × 113 / slope rating. The handicap index is the average of the best 8 of your most recent 20 differentials × 0.96 (96% of the average). The WHS system was standardized globally in 2020.

What handicap allows a recreational golfer to be competitive?

Handicap indexes allow players of different abilities to compete fairly. A 10-handicap golfer playing a course with slope 125 gets a course handicap of approximately 11. Net score = gross score minus course handicap.

What is a scratch golfer?

A scratch golfer has a 0 handicap index, meaning they can play most courses at par or better. A +handicap (better than scratch) indicates the player is expected to score below par. About 2% of registered golfers are scratch or better.
